![]() ![]() In a recent op-ed, poet Tess Taylor argued that the Covid-19 pandemic has radically altered our understanding of time, that level we use to balance the distance between the triage of right now and the entrenched sweep of history (with all its wars and plagues). ![]() ![]() The “blue sky” out of which catastrophe falls is one that always seems bluer, more intense, and one that we might feel that we need new eyes to see and understand for what it really is. What leaps out is the acknowledgment that whenever plague (in Camus’ novel, a metaphor for fascism, tragically literal in our own moment) strikes, it always produces a feeling of sudden awareness that we aren’t ready to face the danger. What stands out to me about this passage is not its apt assessment that many human beings are in denial about the perils of existence. There have been as many plagues as wars in history yet, always plagues and wars take people equally by surprise.” In his 1948 novel “The Plague” – sales of which have ticked upward during the Covid-19 crisis - French author Albert Camus reflects on the nature of outbreak and its relation to the human capacity for surprise: “Everybody knows that pestilences have a way of recurring in the world yet somehow we find it hard to believe in ones that crash down on our heads from a blue sky. ![]() ![]() Then label the body parts of the bunny by using the pencil to draw a line from each word to the matching bunny body part. The close third-person perspective moves among Tess, Marga (a Ninysh countess, naturalist, and adventurer), and Spira, a dragon scholar born without maternal memories who cannot take dragon shape. Where is the new The Doors of Stone chapter that Patrick Rothfuss promised? For instance, a while back Patrick Rothfuss promised his readers a brand new chapter from The Doors of Stone as a way to incentivize them to support his charity Worldbuilders…and more than a year later, he still hasn’t delivered it or updated fans in months as to why, even after the fundraising goals were met. That said, there are questions that remain open. Moreover, Rothfuss has been pretty open about how mental health and certain events in his life have affected his writing process. I firmly believe that authors should take as long they need to write a book that satisfies them. The Doors of Stone does not yet have a release date, and for my money that’s fine. Martin’s sixth A Song of Ice and Firenovel The Winds of Winter, few other books have inspired such a lasting sense of anticipation over the years. Over a decade later, and we’re still waiting on The Doors of Stone, the third and purportedly final book in the series. The second book in the author’s enormously popular Kingkiller Chronicleseries came out way back in 2011. ![]() Fans of Patrick Rothfuss are accustomed to waiting by now. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mike Logan, who was sent to Staten Island as punishment for assaulting a corrupt politician.
